Kurdish Cooking Demonstration & Dinner

  • Raleigh-Cary JCC 12804 Norwood Road Raleigh, NC, 27613 United States (map)

Great cooking isn’t about recipes – it’s about techniques.

Discover Kurdish cuisine while exploring the flavors of the middle east and expanding your vegetarian repertoire.  Learn cooking techniques that were passed down through the generations while hearing first hand stories of how the instructors Kurdish grandmother and her Jewish best friend grew up in Iraq and were separated in 1948.  Then savor the flavors these two best friends shared 60 years ago.

Menu: vegetarian biryani (main dish), jajyk (yogurt, cucumber, garlic) & salad.

About the instructor: Born and raised in the Kurdish region of Iraq, Susan Kocher is a multi-lingual (Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish, and English) trained Geologist who worked with humanitarian organizations back home.  She moved to America in 2013 with her husband and 11 year old daughter Yasna while her husband, a physician back home, is getting his MA in public health at UNC.  While not permitted to work in America, Susan spends her time here volunteering, cooking the meals her grandmother taught her, and spending as much time as possible with her daughter who Susan says is her daily motivation.
