What’s a Nice Jewish Doctor from Long Island Doing in the World’s Most Volatile Areas?”

In partnership with Duke University, the JCC welcomes the world famous humanitarian, Dr. Rick Hodes from the American Jewish Joint Distribution Center to speak with us.

A finalist for the CNN program “CNN Heroes,” highlighting people for their extraordinary achievements, Dr. Hodes work is the subject of the HBO documentary “Making the Crooked Straight” as well as a new book This is a Soul: The Mission of Rick Hodes.

For decades Dr. Hodes, an observant Jew from Long Island, has lived and worked in Ethiopia on behalf of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Dr. Hodes has worked in some of the world’s most volatile regions in the world risking his life to save the lives of others:

  • 1991: surrounded by rebel armies during Operation Solomon, Dr. Rick Hodes was there caring  for Ethiopian Jews in the airlift to Israel.
  • mid 1990s: as one million Rwandan refugees fled to escape genocide, Rick Hodes was there saving refugees afflicted with cholera.
  • 1999:  as the Serbian government murdered ethnic Albanians, Rick Hodes was there treating thousands fleeing to Albania.
